Thalia Theater, Hamburg (2022)
In all the usual productions of Woyzeck, we watch a sweating man for two hours as he kills his partner instead of his oppressors and is mourned as a tragic figure. Well, not with us. In Woyzeck - Das schärfste Messer Deutschlands, performer Anna K. Seidel interweaves several narrative levels in a brute-force performative ride. In interaction with herself and the audience, she opens up a world in which she charmingly points out the parallels between Woyzeck and Milo S., a Tönnies worker who killed his colleague in a factory cutting room in 2021. In this way, she exposes the inhumane systems in which it is above all the socially weak and stigmatized (and often socialized females) on whom the violence of capitalist structures is acted out. And performer Anna K. Seidel asks: Why doesn't Woyzeck take revenge on all those who uphold this system? And why don't we follow him?
